JEC in Elizabeth Announces 2012/2013 Tuition

JEC announced its 2012/2013 tuition schedule (after the jump).  The Goldbergs would be paying 33,500* per year.  A lot of money but still $12K less than most BC schools.

Only 38 minutes from Teaneck according to Google Maps (without traffic, of course). That's actually 4 minutes less than JFS (sorry Avi).

I can't speak to the quality of the education or their "educational philosophy" but the hashkafa seems to be similar to the BC MO schools if their website is any indication.

*includes $1800 discount for 3+ kids, $100 new student application fee youngest & $2400 estimate for lunch not shown on the schedule

I think your numbers are off by $1,200. You only counted a $600 discount for 3 kids. The sheet says it's $600 per child, not $600 total. It would be a discount of $1,800, not $600.

Also, as I wrote in an earlier post, if you live in Elizabeth or Hillside, you get an automatic scholarship for pre-school. I believe for Nursery, it lowers the tuition to $5,600. They also offer incentives to move there - if you buy a house in the area, you get $5,000 off the first year of tuition.

So for young people in the apartments who have 2 young kids, the older of which is going into nursery, that area might be a good place to move to. The first year of tuition would be almost free - the tuition is $5,600, but you get $5,000 off for buying a home. I believe I heard the first year they also waive the building fund. Your'e left with $600 for tuition, plus $100 application fee. That's $700 for a whole year for your kid in nursery!

Oh, one other thing about the Elizabeth/Hillside area - real estate is much cheaper than in BC. You can get a 3 BR home for under $200k right now in Hillside.
Goldbergs live in Teaneck so I can't factor in the Elizabeth/Hillside scholarship but I'll change the 3-child discount.

OK. So the Goldbergs are living in a more expensive community - they pay more for their house, they pay more in property taxes, and they pay for their yeshivas - that they can't afford. Seems like a smart move.

Elizabeth/Hillside is probably $100k cheaper on housing, $4-5k cheaper per year on property taxes, and several thousand cheaper per kid for tuition.

Are the people there all jerks? Do they not have enough restaurants within a 5 minute drive?

I don't get it.

i wish to get back to a previous topic about the fact that people are equating cost with quality. i do believe there is a large chunk of money that has minimal value to the individual students. so when you say that Teaneck spends $25k per kid, then take an example of privately getting 4 students into a homeschooling environment for the same spend - a total of $100k. for that $100k you can get an amazing personal teacher, who will not only teach the material, but there would be tons of money to spend on fieldtrips, art classes, etc which would add levels of enrichment not seen in our schools. of course this is not a community-type of solution, but it does highlight the fact that the vast majority of what we are spending on tuition is not perfectly aligned with the students (i.e. lots of debt service, administration, facilities, etc). of course a proper school does provide more of a social structure than a home-school model, but please realize what percent of your tuition is paying for that, as opposed to educational enrichment.

I know the "Goldbergs" live in Teaneck. I was putting that info out there for the sake of the young couples in Teaneck. A number of young couples have moved from the Teaneck apartments to Hillside, and it's a great option for a young couple looking to buy a home. It's way more affordable than Teaneck is. What's the downside? That there aren't a few dozen restaurants? When you're paying tuition, who has the money to eat out? And the Chinese food in Elizabeth is way better than Chopstix anyway :)

A Google search found me the info for the lunch program from last year :http://yeshiva.thejec.info/jupgrade/attachments/article/49/JEC%20Lunch%20Program%202011-12.pdf

For your example, the cost would be $2,050 if paid before the end of July.

The link you have is to the old website. They do update it occasionally, but not very often. Try this link instead: http://yeshiva.thejec.info/jupgrade/index.php
Thanks JEC Parent, I'll correct it.
I have to agree with JS (without his condescending attitude "Are the people there all jerks"?) Teaneck is a very expensive place to live. If you can't afford it, why live here? Elizabth, Passaic, Paramus, etc are all cheaper.
I guess this also debunks the myth that a school needs to know how many students will be registered before setting tuition. I do strongly believe that the late Rabbi Teitz zt"l imbued a much better sense of derech eretz into the school than exists in the current schools in Bergen COunty
RYNJ parents benefiting from many of the changes listed in the above letter should all be sending GD flowers for Shavuot to thank him for starting He'Atid. By starting He'Atid (which is still far cheaper than RYNJ once you hit 1st Grade), GD has put downward price pressure on all the legacy schools. When you have a couple extra bucks in your pocket next year, thank GD for that.
